SUMMARY
In One Punch Man Season 2 Episode 11 (aka Episode 23), “The Varieties of Pride”, Death Gatling and a few of his hand-picked buddies surrounded Garou. The villain was wounded; poison ran through his veins. He could barely stand on his feet. Still, he remains defiant – especially after Death Gatling and his A-class heroes give Garou a clue to their weakness – a weakness he can exploit… Meanwhile, King tries to teach Saitama the finer aspects of video games, but Saitama’s gaming skills seem inversely proportional to his own heroes. Finally, Genos received a powerful upgrade and returned to action. Will his upgrades live up to his aspirations? Or will he end up back in the store?

Garou’s reaction to the Death Gatling was just perfect. Catch from the Hulu stream.Have you reached a point in your life where you suddenly realize that everything you thought you knew about the world was not true? Maybe you believed yours, thinking it really wanted to help everyone get better – only to learn that the leadership was covering up sex crimes? Maybe you really thought your government was all about the freedom and protection of its citizens – only to find out that it used to (and probably still does) fund unethical medical experiments without informed consent? Or did you really think your government was all about international law and the spread of democracy, only to find that they deliberately destroyed the democratically elected prime minister of Iran in 1953 – setting the stage for crisis after crisis we see in the Middle East?You probably get the point, but it was damn cathartic.
After a certain point in your life, you realize that you can’t trust institutions. You have to figure out who you can trust from person to person. It’s the scariest and most liberating lesson I’ve ever learned. And One Punch Man Season 2 just moved into that space.
How Many of us Haven’t been in this Place after Playing a Video Game for too Long Without Winning?
We had advice all season. Garou was a Hero Hunter, but he sounded a lot like Stain from My Hero Academia. He’s a “monster,” but his personal code of ethics is distractingly commendable. Is he really a villain? In this episode, most of the A-class heroes following the Death Gatling (but not all – and this is important) didn’t follow him because they wanted to be more effective cleaners against the monsters. No, they did it because they were sick of S-class heroes getting all the glory. He criticizes the rating systems as being unfair as he recalls watching the Tornado of Terror wipe out a monster he couldn’t touch. He ended up raging against the Garou for getting so much attention for defeating the S-class heroes. “That makes you the perfect target to prove my point,” he said (1:34).
And Garou looked at him with an expression that simply said WTF (1:39).I know that expression. I wore that expression.It’s the expression of someone who thought they were debating the origin of the universe, only to learn that the other side was stuck at the “no, you’re the ugly head” level.
Are they really heroes?
I’ll give Garou credit: he laughed at that. I’m still trying to adjust to my realizations! I think that’s why it earned my favorite moment of the episode.
